Este miércoles 5 de agosto, Radiohead ha puesto a la venta a través de w.a.s.t.e., su propia tienda online, el tema “Harry Patch (In Memory Of)”, dedicado al último veterano inglés sobreviviente de la primera guerra mundial.
Según ha explicado el mismo Thom Yorke, la inspiración para este tema surgió en 2005, cuando escuchó una entrevista que Harry Patch concedió a BBC Radio 4. “La manera en la que habló sobre la guerra tuvo un impacto muy profundo en mí”, asegura el cantante.
Patch fue el último veterano sobreviviente de la primera guerra mundial, hasta que falleció a la edad de 111 años, el pasado 25 de julio.
El tema, cuya venta se ha hecho de forma exclusiva a través de internet, fue grabado en los últimos meses, mientras la banda trabajaba en su nuevo álbum en Oxfordshire, junto a su productor Nigel Godrich.
El precio de venta de “Harry Patch (In Memory Of)” es de 1 libra esterlina (aproximadamente 1,7 US $). Todos los ingresos de la venta estarán destinados a la Royal British Legion, organismo que trabaja en pro de los veteranos de guerra y miembros activos del ejército inglés.
Radiohead aboga esta vez por la paz y la comprensión. “Ojalá no se nos olviden los horrores de la guerra”, anhela Yorke.

Recently the last remaining UK veteran of the 1st world war Harry Patch died at the age of 111.
I had heard a very emotional interview with him a few years ago on the Today program on Radio4.
The way he talked about war had a profound effect on me.
It became the inspiration for a song that we happened to record a few weeks before his death.
It was done live in an abbey. The strings were arranged by Jonny.
I very much hope the song does justice to his memory as the last survivor.
It would be very easy for our generation to forget the true horror of war, without the likes of Harry to remind us.
I hope we do not forget.
As Harry himself said
"Irrespective of the uniforms we wore, we were all victims".
